Hydroponics in Satara
Satara is two growing climates in one district, and they want two different structures.
Up on the plateau at Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani the nights are cool for most of the year and the monsoon is among the heaviest anywhere in Maharashtra. Down in the Krishna valley, around Karad, Koregaon and Phaltan, the summers are hot and dry. A cover that makes sense in one half of the district is the wrong cover in the other, and the crop list follows the same split.

The crops worth the structure in Satara
Not everything is worth growing without soil. These are the ones where the return justifies the system, and where the local market is already asking for them.

Strawberry
The crop this district is known for. On table-top gutters or dutch buckets the fruit hangs clear of the ground, picking happens at waist height instead of on your knees, and the splash that spreads rot in a ground bed during a Mahabaleshwar monsoon has nowhere to come from.

Lettuce and salad leaf
Iceberg, butterhead, lollo rosso and oak leaf. Cool plateau nights are the condition these need and the reason they can be grown here without the cooling a hotter district would have to pay for.

Coloured capsicum
Red, yellow and orange, on dutch buckets under a naturally ventilated polyhouse. A valley crop rather than a plateau one.

Broccoli and cherry tomato
Both sell into the same hill-station hotel and city retail demand that takes the strawberries, which is a real advantage: one delivery run.
/02 What it has to cope with
Designing for Satara, not for a catalogue
On the plateau, rain is the problem, not heat
At around 1,300 metres you are covering a crop to keep water off it and to hold humidity down, not to keep warmth in. That points at a naturally ventilated structure with generous ridge venting and a table-top system underneath, rather than anything sealed.
In the valley, it is the other way round
Karad, Phaltan and Satara town get properly hot. Shade net over a ventilated polyhouse, and a system that keeps root temperature stable through the afternoon, matter more than rain shedding.
Two hours from where the channels are made
Satara is a short run down the highway from our unit in Katraj. Run lengths get cut to your bay rather than to a catalogue length, and a replacement part is a drive rather than a freight booking.
